Well we successfully wrapped up our Bat theme and most of our Pumpkin theme this week! We carved pumpkins (I'm sure your heard all about it) on Friday and it was so much fun! Thankfully, my husband Rob agreed to brave a day in grade one with me. The kiddies were so excited and grossed out by having to scoop the goop out of their pumpkins. Lots of laughs, lots of happy kids, that's my favorite kind of Friday!
This week we will be having our class Halloween party on Thursday afternoon at 2:00. Please remember to send your snack if you are assigned. On Halloween, there will be a "Halloween Parade"at 1:00 where students from the whole school will parade down to the gym and show of their awesome costumes. Parents and siblings are welcome to come and see all the costumes. Please send your child to school on Halloween all decked out in their costume.
On Friday, we will be making "gak" with our Reading Buddies from Mrs. Beazer's Grade Four class. The only thing your child needs to bring for this is a medium sized bowl to mix their gak together.
Doors to the school are starting to be locked during the school day. If you need to come in the school, you are asked to come in the main door (by the office) and get a visitor's pass on your way in.
To finish off, here are some happy pumpkin pictures!

Pumpkin Pictures
We started doing some "pumpkin estimation" yesterday. The kiddies were so excited to be able to get hands-on with their pumpkins! Each child transformed into a little "pumpkin investigator". We talked about how to estimate and then students estimated how many lines were on their pumpkins.

Halloween Snacks, Skating Info.
I hope everyone had as great of a week as me! Every day I am loving my class more and more. We are working really hard and learning ways to make us better readers. This week, we focused on "Stretchy Snake"-students s-t-r-e-t-c-h out the words they are reading and then blend them together to figure out the words.
The grade ones will start skating at the ice rink in November. Just as a heads up, students each need to have a CSA approved helmet or they will not be allowed on the ice. Bike helmets and ski helmets are NOT CSA approved.
This week will surely be a fun one!
We are doing our mystery bags on Tuesday, so please have them to school on Monday to be safe. If your child was not at school on Friday, I will send home one on Monday.
We will be wrapping up our Bat theme on Thursday.
Please send a pumpkin with your child this week. We will be carving our pumpkins on Friday, but we will be doing math activities every day this week, so the sooner they have a pumpkin, the better! If they don't have a pumpkin for math, I will just have them share with someone in the class (the same goes for carving). Don't worry, your child will not be carving their own pumpkin, just drawing on the face and scooping out the gunk and seeds.
We will be focusing this week on looking at the pictures to give us clues about the words we are reading. Please practice this at home as you are reading with your child.
For our class parties, I like to assign children to bring specific healthy snacks. Especially for Halloween, I believe they will be getting quite enough sugary treats! Each child will be responsible for bringing ONE part of the snack for ONE class party during the year. Here are the assignments for the class party on October 31:
Thanks for reading! Enjoy your weekend :)

Chester update and Locked Doors
WE FOUND CHESTER!!!!!
Chester is our brand new pet salamander for our classroom and last night he escaped! Students spent all of their free time today looking for him to no luck. Apparently the custodian found him last night in the hallway by Sierra's boot and thought he was Mr. Gilson's pet so he put Chester in Mr. Gilson's empty tank. Mr. Gilson was alarmed after school today when he found he unexpectedly had a new pet! I took him back and he is happy in his newly-roofed tank. Yaay happy day!
Official update on the locked doors in the school:
We were going to start locking all of the doors in the school starting at 8:25 except for the main door (by the office). The reason for this is strictly for the safety of students. With locking the doors, we can know exactly who is in the school and what they are doing. This will prevent any unwanted intruders that could be potential threats. This whole plan is supposed to start on Tuesday, but it has been postponed for a little bit until we get the last couple kinks worked out. Please start practicing anyway! Once this has officially started, students are asked to come in their doors (the same as their recess doors) before school. Parents who want to come in the school are asked to come in the main doors by the office and get a visitors pass. PLEASE don't let this stop you from coming and talking to me if you have any concerns! I love talking to parents and seeing you regularly!
We will be having class pictures taken on October 23 for the yearbook.
Pizza Day is on Wednesday, October 16.
Book Orders are due on Friday, October 18.
Last week we practiced mixing colors using jell-o. Best day ever.
In Social Studies, we have been talking about being a part of a group. This week students brought in objects that represented a group they were a part of. They did such a great job explaining to the class what group they were a part of!
Thanks for reading! I hope everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving and the holiday gives you a chance to get over all these sicknesses that are going around!!
